We are in the midst of a mental health crisis. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds worldwide. In the US, 41% of female high schoolers report feeling prolonged sadness or hopelessness. In Puerto Rico, this number is over 45%. What can we do? One thing we can all do is become trained in mental health first aid.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid teaches how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The course introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health concerns, builds understanding of their impact and provides an overview of common treatments. Through role-playing and simulations, it demonstrates how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions; provide initial help; and connect people to professional, peer and social supports as well as self-help resources.

A typical mental health first aid certificate requires an eight hour in-person course. Some courses focus on general population, while others target young people’s mental health needs.
Who Should Take It?
I think all social leaders should get certified in this type of first aid. We can help demistify mental health and substance abuse in our communities. Imagine how useful this type of course can be for teachers and parents. This can be a powerful tool for medical professionals and civic leaders. People who work with vulnerable populations would also benefit.
It would also be very interesting for peers and community members to take this training. How would that impact early detection in schools and workplaces? Would mental health investment improve if lawmakers took these courses?
