As I sit here watching the news about yet another mass shooting in the US, I am asking myself “what can I do?”. There are so many challenges in the world and most of us want change. The first step, which we often skip, is introspection. Let’s explore the power of individual and collective introspection in creating change.
Introspection is Hard
Introspection is uncomfortable. Taking an unflinching and unvarnished view at our own thoughts and actions can feel overwhelming or unnecessary. It is easier to evaluate others instead of ourselves. This holds especially true in circumstances we are not directly involved in. “But I didn’t DO anything! I don’t have to change!”
An Exercise in Leadership
When we ask ourselves “how did I contribute to this status quo?“, we are acknowledging our place in the world. Each of us plays a role in current events, either as professionals or citizens. Our impact may be direct or indirect, yet we all have it. Engaging in self-reflection is empowering. We lead by example, inviting others to do so as well.
Introspection Loves Company
Self-reflection is not as scary when we know others are doing it as well. If we ask “What can I do to change?” and give our personal answer out loud, the next person will be more open to their own introspection. It also opens the door to collective reflection: “What can we as a group to change?“. These are incredibly productive conversations. Try it!
Introspection Leads to Transformation
Only true understanding leads to real change, both individually and collectively. This is key in complex social issues. People say “be the change you want to see in the world”. Being that change starts with introspection.
I am doing lots of introspection. Are you?
