Do you feel overwhelmed? Stressed all the time? From climate change to political upheaval, the world can seem like a pretty gloomy place right now. It is okay to feel scared. But, don’t let hopelessness drag you down! Here are my tips to deal with the dark times.
Remember that Better Times are Ahead
Talk to any 80-year old lady and you will hear a version of “this too shall pass”. Keep current events in perspective. The older members of your community have survived wars, economic strife, discrimination and all kinds of crazy things. They not only survived – many thrived. Don’t believe me? Go volunteer at a nursing home and strike up a conversation.
Do Something Constructive
Hopelessness goes hand in hand with feeling powerless. So, get some of your power back! Choose one constructive thing you can do and go do it. This is a great time to embrace your inner social leader. Plant a tree. Feed your neighbors. Register to vote. Run for office. It is your choice.
I, for example, started this blog to provide free tools to people who want to change the world.
Surround Yourself with Kindness
Shine a light in the darkness. Kindness is the balm you need during the tough times. Invite your kindest friends to breakfast. Read biographies of benevolent people. Keep a gratitude journal. Above all, be kind to yourself and others.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness: Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Keep Up your Self-Care Routine
I have a hard time with this one! I seem to throw out my healthy habits at the first sign of dark times ahead. If a hurricane warning is posted, for example, I immediately reach for a cookie. Oh no!!! So, let’s practice self-care together in stressful moments. Exercise, sleep, mindfulness, meditation and nutritious eating all alleviate anxiety.
Know When to Ask for Professional Help
Are your feelings of doom, anger or anxiety persisting? Are they overwhelming you? Then, it’s time to seek out professional assistance. Find a licensed therapist (psychologist or psychiatrist) to help. In an emergency, you can also reach out to your local Suicide Prevention Hotline. Don’t be put off by the name. They are there to help all of us.
Remember: the dark times will pass. There is a brighter future ahead. Don’t despair. Take care of yourself and take back your power. You are resilient. You can do this!
