Social leaders dedicate their lives to changing the world, making the world a better place to live.
They are teachers, philanthropists, non-profit leaders, doctors, nurses, social workers, activists, community organizers, social entrepreneurs, passionate volunteers, etc.
They work in diverse fields, addressing complex issues in their own ways. Social leaders encompass every age, gender, ethnicity and socioeconomic background. Although they might seem very different, the most successful social leaders share some common (or, should I say, uncommon) characteristics.
Let me share a few with you:
1. Inspiring
Inspiration is the necessary spark for social change. The best social leaders find allies by helping people connect deeply with the dream of a better world. Nothing is more inspiring than having a shared dream, a common goal.
2. Empathetic
The most effective social leaders are moved to action by the plight of others. They are in touch with their own humanity and, in turn, can recognize everyone else’s humanity. Thus, these leaders listen actively and learn from others. They understand that to lead is to serve.
3. Trustworthy
Social impact is all about a diverse group of people helping each other and working together to make things better. Everyone prefers to collaborate with a social leader they trust, someone who is authentic and honors her commitments.
4. Persistent
Changing the world is a marathon, not a sprint. A social leader must be ready to persist in the face of adversity and setbacks.
5. Collaborative
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
-African proverb
No one person has the answer to complex social issues. A great social leader nurtures a collaborative environment that integrates diverse voices and promotes equity.
