Do you ever feel uncomfortable having a profound conversation? Try a conversation game! Conversation games can facilitate deep insights in a less stressful setting. Here are some of my favorites.
Conversations Shape our Relationships
Conversations have the power to connect us with others and ourselves. We like fun chats with friends, but tend to avoid those that make us feel vulnerable. Yet, those are often the most powerful. How can we create a safe environment to spur those deeper conversations? Managers, coaches, teachers and parents often ask ourselves this question.
Conversation Games are Deep and Stress-Free
I often use conversation games with my coaching clients. They trigger profound thinking with a sense of freedom. Thus, it’s important to remind participants that there are no right or wrong answers. We are playing for awareness and understanding.
Game #1: Truth or Dare
“Truth or Dare” is a popular party game where participants have to choose between an unknown question to answer or a challenge (dare) to perform. I play a g-rated version with my clients featuring questions and dares related to their dreams and goals for growth. Hence, you can do this with just about any subject. All you have to do is come up with related questions and dares.
For example, here is a sample set of questions and dares for those defining their dreams:
Sample Truths
-What is your dream?
-What does your ideal day look like?
-What is your proudest moment?
-What do you love?
-What is one thing you want to change in the world?
-Who is your hero?
-If you could combine what you love with a way to earn a living, what would it look like?
-What do you need to be happy?
-What makes you special?
-What are your 3 greatest strengths?
Sample Dares
-Ask 3 people what they value most about you
-Create a dream board
-Thank someone
-Post an inspiring quote on social media
-Volunteer this week for a local non-profit
-Perform a random act of kindness
-Cold call/email your role model
-Find someone on LinkedIn living your dream
-Sleep 8 hours every night this week
-Brainstorm an idea with at least 2 other people
-Learn 1 new thing
-Try something you have always wanted to do
Game #2: Card Game
This is a simple game where participants pick question cards to answer from a pile. You can design your own questions or use one of the many sets readily available. For example, I particularly like the 52 Essential Conversations series.
There are many ways to combine games with deep conversations. So, your imagination is the only limit. How can you apply this concept in your own life?
