“What can I do to pursue my dream?” This question stumps most young people with whom I speak. This article provides tips on exploring your dream so you can start making it a reality.
In a previous article, we discussed the importance of understanding:
-Who do you need to BE to live your dream?
-What do you need to KNOW to live your dream?
-What do you need to DO to live your dream?
The best source for answers to these questions is someone already living your dream – your role model.
Find your Role Model
Someone out there is living your ideal life or something close to it right now. She is your role model. You may know her personally or you may have seen her in the media.
What if you don’t know of anyone living your dream? Then, it is time to research!
You can look for people living your dream through a variety of sources, like:
-Books, articles or news stories regarding your interests
–LinkedIn searches (LinkedIn is a GREAT professional resource)
–Facebook searches and interest groups
–Google searches of your dream
-Your network, ie. friends or acquaintances of friends
Study What They Do and How (their Be-Know-Do)
When I was studying for my coaching credentials, my role model was Dr. Marshall Goldsmith. I had learned about his coaching through an article in the Harvard Business Review.
Even though we were strangers, I emailed him interview questions to better understand his Be-Know-Do as an influential Executive Coach. Dr. Goldsmith graciously answered!
There are many ways to study the Be-Know-Do of your role model, the person living your dream. You can follow my example and seek a conversation with her. You can also glean information from publicly available sources, such as:
-Websites (featuring your role model)
-Role model’s social media
-Videos (Documentaries, TED Talks or YouTube)
-Case studies, books or articles related to your role model
Through these efforts, you will gain a better understanding of the skills and characteristics your dream requires. Now, you are ready to start experimenting your dream. More on that in Part 2 of Exploring your Dream.
