Even though my dad died years ago, his love and lessons live on. Here are some of my favorite leadership lessons from my father. I hope his recipe for life and work inspires you as much as it does me (to see lessons from my mom, click here).
Lead by example.
People pay more attention to your actions than your words. So, consistently model the culture you want to promote.
Act ethically.
A clear conscience is a great sleep aid. Be true to your ethics in every aspect of your life. It makes everything easier.
If you can, help.
Helping others feeds the soul. So, if you can, help people. Something that may be small for you can be a life changer for someone else.
Think critically…and big!
One person CAN make a difference in the world. So, don’t be afraid to think big. Just make sure that you back it up with research, planning and deep reflection. Critical thinking is a great investment of your time.
Reward excellence and commitment.
Value excellence and commitment over perfection. Celebrate the people who consistently show up, striving to do better every day (including you!).
Treat everyone with respect.
Every person has something marvelous to contribute, if given the opportunity. So, give it to them. Respect is an environment. Either you create it and live in it, or you don’t. If you truly respect yourself, you respect others as well.
Persevere and be positive.
Perseverance and a positive attitude are the greatest determinants of success. Nurture your ability to pick yourself up after disappointment and learn from mistakes.
Communicate well…and often.
Connecting with others is what life and work is all about. Communicate effectively by seeking to understand and be understood.
View education as the great equalizer.
Education, both formal and informal, is the gateway to opportunity. Be a lifelong learner and help others be lifelong learners, too.
Be honorable, strive to be better and help others. These leadership lessons are some of the best gifts my father ever gave me. What are your favorite leadership lessons from the people you love?
