Do Any of These Sound Familiar?
“I am not very good at it so…”
“People will think I’m stupid”
“Who would want to listen to me?”
“I’ll wait until I’m ready”
“Other people are doing so much better than me”
If any of these sound familiar – congrats! You have the (dubious) honor of being a perfectionist!
Perfectionism Plagues Many of Us
Perfectionism is the pursuit of the ever-elusive “perfection”. Does perfection exist? Of course not! We all know it. Yet, most successful people suffer from perfectionism. Many don’t even realize it. This is especially true for women. Perfectionism manifests itself in a few forms:
-
- Fear – fear of failure (or, oddly enough, of success), fear of being judged and lack of confidence
- Judgment – it can be self-criticism, or the judgment of others
- Expectations – having certain pre-conceived notions of appropriate outcomes
- Comparison – comparing yourself to others and finding either party lacking
Perfection is a Dream Killer
Perfection, in its many forms, keeps many people from pursuing their dreams. The road to our dreams is all about growth, both in confidence and in understanding. Perfectionism blinds us and keeps us in a rut.
Hello Progress, Adios Perfection!
Saying goodbye to perfectionism is tough, but doable! The first step is to recognize our various perfectionist patterns. The second is to choose progress, over perfection. Embrace who you are and focus on becoming a better version of yourself. Go after your dreams and enjoy the journey, bumps and all.
