As I discussed in an earlier article, your dream is the starting point of everything. So, what should you do if you don’t have a dream? Unleash your creativity and find it! It’s in you, somewhere. This post teaches you how to do a Dream Board to delineate your ideal life.
What is a Dream Board?
A dream board is a sensory manifestation of your ideal life: what you love, what inspires you, how you want to live, what is important to you, etc. Some people refer to it as a vision board. It is commonly made on a poster board in a collage format.
Do your Dream Board in a Format that Speaks to You
You don’t have to do a collage. This is a creative exercise to spur YOUR imagination and stir YOUR soul. Therefore, use any format you like. Some of my clients do a collection of photographs and some do a painting. People who love to write do a free-flowing poem or put words on a board. Some of my clients connect to sounds, so they create a musical playlist. Others are tech savvy, so they create videos or online presentations. There are plenty of cool tools out there. If it speaks to you, go for it!
Creating the Dream Board
This is a visceral process, so don’t think or plan too much as you are putting your dream board together. Let it flow, as you ask yourself the guiding questions.
Guiding Questions
- What is your dream?
- What do you love?
- What are you passionate about?
- What inspires you?
- What is important for you?
- How do you want to live?
- How do you want to feel?
- Who do you want surrounding you?
- How do you want to wake up in the morning? How do you want to go to sleep at night?
You can create your dream board in one sitting or a bit at a time, whenever you feel inspired.
Analyzing Your Dream Board
Once you have finished your dream board, see what it says about you and your dream. Do this with someone who will listen and ask questions, without judgment. Saying your observations aloud is enlightening. It can be a coach (like me!), a mentor or a friend. In fact, you and a friend can serve as dream buddies, helping each other in the process.
Guiding Questions
Observe your dream board from a place of curiosity and use these questions as a guide:
- What is on the board?
- What is not on the board?
- Where are things placed? What is most prominent?
- What surprises you?
- What did you learn about yourself in the process?
- What are the key elements of your ideal life? Write them down.
Your Dream Board as Inspiration
Your dream board can serve as inspiration as you enact your life plan. So, keep your dream board somewhere you can see it or frequently access it. Find a name for your dream that connects with you. It can be profound or fun. A catchy dream name and the board are shortcuts to the excitement and hope your dream represents.
