You live in the age of instant information. So, take advantage of it! This article explores some ways that Google can make you a better social leader.
I am using Google here as a verb meaning to look up something through an internet search engine. Remember your internet search basics:
Phrase your search in a few different ways.
Search in English when possible (less than 10% of internet content is in Spanish).
Scroll through a few pages of results to go beyond the sponsored results.
Focus on trustworthy sources.
Google to Learn
Use internet searches to learn new things every day. I certainly do. Whenever someone says a word you don’t know or refers to something you don’t understand, do a search. Want to learn a new skill? Type “How to ____?”. You will find videos, articles, infographics, free courses, books, etc. There is something for every style of learner.
Google to Stop Fake News
Deliberate misinformation is rampant these days. Don’t allow yourself to be so manipulated. Verify things you see online, especially if you are tempted to share it. Search “is ____ true?” or do a search to check if this data has appeared in a trustworthy source. I pay special attention to reputable academics and non-partisan news organizations or non-profits.
You can also check if the information holds true or if it has been updated. For example, I always search a missing person’s name before I share their “missing” poster on social media. Most of the time, I don’t need to share because the case has been resolved.
Google to Find Best Practices
Many organizations post wonderful tools and case studies. So, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel! Learn from others. You can look up “Best tools for ____” or “template for ____”.
Google to Find Opportunities
An internet search can be an amazing window to a world of opportunities. Jobs, scholarships, deals, customers, collaborators…they are all there! A well-implemented internet search can be almost as powerful as having family connections or studying in an elite university. For example, let’s say you are seeking a new career. Through an internet search, you can find mentors, free classes, internships, interview prep tools and intelligence on your sector.
Google to Understand Other Points of View
A social leader needs to understand multiple perspectives. The internet gives you that chance. You can find academic research, TED Talks and opinion pieces from almost any point of view. It also identifies people you can talk to for that different perspective.
