I read an article today that said the key to resilience is to recharge. Couldn’t agree more! This got me thinking about the importance of true REST (yep, in all caps). You need to rest your body, mind and soul in order to give the world your best. Here are some tips on how to do it.
Sleep
Sleep is the cornerstone of rest and self-care. Aim for 8 hours nightly of quality sleep.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is like the more modern sister of meditation. It’s all about deep breathing and awareness of your body. Be present to quiet your raising mind. Mayo Clinic recommends several easy mindfulness techniques.
Take Random Breaks
Step away from the craziness of your routine for a few minutes throughout the day. Use that time to connect to something you enjoy. This will help rest your whole being. For example, savor your favorite coffee next to a beautiful potted plant. These breaks provide an opportunity to practice other items on this list.
Incorporate Gratitude
As we have previously discussed, an attitude of gratitude leads to a well-rested spirit. Give thanks and remind yourself of things that make you feel grateful.
Do What You Love
Doing the things you love help you rest mind, body and soul. So, incorporate those to your daily routine. Also, make time for your hobbies and favorite activities.
Exercise
Exercise lifts your mood, gives you energy and helps you sleep. It can also create a respite for mindfulness and creativity. I get some of my best ideas while walking.
Celebrate
Sometimes people confuse pain with productivity. Don’t fall into that trap! Joy and celebration are a better energy booster than any drug. Incorporate small celebrations into your routine. Cheer for a successful meeting or a job well done. Make time to celebrate with family and friends – parties, picnics, impromptu family room karaoke…anything goes!
Connect
Connecting with the people you love is the most essential part of rest for your soul. Spend quality time with those who uplift you and see how you feel.
Practice these 8 items consistently, rest and share your best self with the world. How’s that for productivity?
